Panaeolus, the "mottlegills," are slender grassland and dung mushrooms named for the uneven, spotted appearance of their maturing gills, where patches of dark spores ripen unevenly to give a mottled look. They are among the most reliably psilocybin-rich mushrooms outside Psilocybe itself, and two species in particular, Panaeolus cinctulus and Panaeolus cyanescens, are important active mushrooms in their own right.
The genus is closely tied to grazing animals. Many species fruit directly on dung or on the rich, manured soil of pastures, which places them in the same habitats as several active Psilocybe and makes cattle and horse country their natural range. This dung-loving habit is ancient and worldwide, and it means Panaeolus turns up on every inhabited continent wherever livestock graze.
A jet-black spore print sets the genus apart from the purple-brown of Psilocybe and the rusty orange of Gymnopilus. Combined with the mottled gills and the slender, often fragile fruiting bodies, this makes Panaeolus a reasonably distinctive genus at the group level, even though individual species are small, brownish, and easy to overlook among grass.

Ecology and identification
Panaeolus species are small, slender mushrooms with conical to bell-shaped caps that are usually smooth and often crack in dry weather. The defining feature is the gills, which mature unevenly so that dark and pale areas coexist, giving the mottled look that names the genus. At maturity the gills and spore print are black, a strong contrast with most other psilocybin genera.
The active species tend to bruise blue where handled, like Psilocybe, reflecting their psilocin content. This bluing, the black spore print, the mottled gills, and a dung or pasture habitat together characterise the active members. As always, the genus contains inactive species and overlaps with other small grassland mushrooms, so the group-level features are a starting point for documentation rather than a field key.
Because they grow on dung and manured ground, Panaeolus often share their habitat with harmless coprophilous fungi and with the occasional toxic species, and their small size makes them easy to trample or miss. They fruit quickly after rain and decay just as fast, which is typical of the dung-colonising lifestyle.
Chemistry and potency
The active species produce psilocybin and psilocin, and some, notably Panaeolus cyanescens, do so at high concentrations that place them among the more potent psilocybin mushrooms. Panaeolus cinctulus is more moderate but very widespread and dependable, which has made it one of the commonly encountered active mushrooms in temperate regions.
As in Psilocybe, potency varies with species, population, and conditions, and the same cautions about unpredictability apply. The genus also contains serotonin and related indole compounds that complicate the chemical picture in some species, part of the reason that a few Panaeolus and their close relatives have a contested or borderline reputation. The clearly active species, however, are well documented and chemically consistent enough to be treated as genuine psilocybin producers.
Safety and look-alikes
The grassland and dung habitat that Panaeolus favours is shared by other small brown mushrooms, including species that cause gastrointestinal illness, so the usual hazard of small-brown-mushroom confusion applies. The black spore print is a helpful separator from many look-alikes, but distinguishing species within the genus, and from neighbouring genera, still depends on microscopy and careful observation.
Panaeolus is also a frequent subject of poison-control calls simply because its species are so common in lawns and pastures where children and animals encounter them. In the modern era Panaeolus cyanescens, often sold under the name "blue meanie," became one of the more widely cultivated active species alongside Psilocybe cubensis, valued for its high potency. Its cultivation history is more recent and less documented than that of cubensis, and it is a more demanding mushroom to grow, but its inclusion in cultivation guides underlines that Panaeolus is not a marginal curiosity but a genuine and recognised source of psilocybin.
The genus also plays an outsized role in the everyday, accidental side of the story. Because Panaeolus and its relatives are so common in lawns, pastures, and compost, they account for a large share of the small brown mushrooms that people and animals encounter without any intention of seeking them out.
